Our project Director, Coordinator, Counselor and office staff was present at the above said program along with police officials and their staff. Our project Director spoke on this occasion and  informed that STI , HIV/AIDS is spreading very widely in Hindupur and Dharmavaram areas and many parts of Andhrapradesh state. It is increasing from village level to town level and then to city level. The rural poor because of low economic standards and poverty are doing Sex work. Sex workers include both FSWs and MSMs. The main reason for spread of STI and HIV/AIDS are all as follows.

  1. Blood transfusion without proper testing of the presence of HIV/AIDS in people.
  2. Use of un sterilized injections.
  3. Un safe sex methods and non use of condoms.
  4. People are having more than one as their sex partners.
  5. HIV/AIDS is transmitted from HIV/AIDS mother to the child.

More people in their youth and adult age are being affected by HIV/AIDS. Old people percentage of having STI, HIV/AIDS is less as compared to the youth and adult. The main reason for MSMS doing sex work is due to unemployment and poverty. Some MSMS are doing sex work as a hobby. HIV/AIDS patients are both physically and mentally weak.  In this connection Chaithanya NGO is doing good service under the AP Alliance Project both in Hindupur and Dharmavaram towns and surrounding villages by offering free treatment and medication to the infected/affected key population.

The total responsibility for creating awareness regarding STI and HIV/AIDS lies not only with the government and NGOS but also people and society in general. Only then STI and HIV/AIDS could be prevented and controlled to a larger extent. The regular use of condoms plays a vital role in the prevention of STI and control of HIV/AIDS .Many people feel that use of condom does not give them full satisfaction while doing sex. But this is not correct. Adopting safe sex methods is very important.

Radio/Television/Media plays an important role along with hoardings/posters for creating awareness on STI HIV/AIDS and also prevention & control.  KP who are involved in sex work both FSW & MSMs are facing ill respect form society and also their relatives & near by residents.  Female sex workers also facing threats from brokers, Rowdies & police personnel for free sex and they are also harassed.
Many HIV affected patients area dead due to untimely treatment and non availability of proper counseling and treatment and medication facilities before our clinics ware started at Hindupur & Dharmavaram. In this connection our Chaitanya NGO is referring such serious HIV positive patents to under go treatment at Bhathalapalli and also providing TA & DA charges to such HIV affected people and their families.  The staff of the Chaitanya NGO is also helping poor HIV affected people financially if necessary and also participate in the funeral ceremony of AIDS patients who are dead. The social service activity of Chaitanya NGO and it staff are very much appreciated by the society.

On this occasion our project coordinator also spoke on safe sex methods and practices. Our Counselor also thanked the Police officers and their staff for giving an opportunity to our NGO towards sensitization programme on STI / HIV /AIDS.  Jail inmates and Jailors were also included in the above said programme. After the programme the CD on the subject were shown through TV to enable the police personnel to understand better. Questionnaire was also distributed to all the police staff present who attended the programme and answers were collected to understand better the successes of the sensitization programme on STI/ HIV/ AIDS prevention and control methods. Blood samples are collected for examination. New police recruits were specially told to adopt safe sex method and avoid free sex with FSWs.  It was very unfortunate that despite of our strong persuasion no family members of police personnel were present on this occasion.

In total the sensitization programme was a grate success and police Department confirmed to us that they will follow all the safe sex methods required to prevent STI  and control of AIDS.

  2. Police personnel were also informed  not to harass/ Ill treat / exploit sex workers.
  3. Police personnel were also informed to educate their family members on this subject.
